The Guardian

"The Guardian" - Copyright 2006 Grace Sapp

They say you can hear his mournful voice echoing down the sides of the great mountain only on the quietest and emptiest of nights. Many have stepped outside their homes on these silent nights, to feed their animals or tend to the bountiful herd, and been frozen by the his forbidding call. It frightens all those who hear it, and even the mightiest and strongest men of my people have shaken beneath the ominous melody. For it is a call which does not only ring in a man’s ears, but also in his heart.

They say that he traverses down the great mountain towards our villages, to keep a watchful and warning eye on our kind, to keep us from trespassing into his territory. Protectively he wanders the peaks, keeping all man away from the mountain spirit. – One rumored to be of unparalleled beauty and fragility, elusive as a whisper upon one of those frigid mountain breezes... She is said to be his only companion.

He is a beast of much spirit and wisdom. Outsiders know him as The Yeti, a word in our native tongue meaning Magical Creature. We know him as the Rimi, or Nyalmot. He possesses the strength of a dozen men, a strength given to him by spiritual forces and unmatched by any other creature. My people know him as The Great Beast, The Ferocious One, and The Killer. To them, he is a heartless monster. - A creature to fear, and a spirit of mystery.

But I know him better than they.

I know that he guards that sacred mountain from the curses of Man. I know that he protects the peak of that mountain with such a ferocity that it brings all of mankind to his knees. I know that he longs for companionship, and I know that this is what drives him from his home at the Great Summit to cast a scornful eye on my people. For the legends are indeed correct. The Yeti IS a protector, a guardian.

However..

I know that it is not what he is guarding..

But Whom.
